1st United Credit Union makes cross training, skill development, and promoting our employees a top priority. And in 2016, we designed and launched a unique rotation program rewarding employees who want to work hard, learn more, and try something new. “We have talented employees and this program gives us one more way to engage and retain them,” explains Lynell Fraley, Vice President of Human Resources.
Through our program, team members are given the opportunity to work in areas where they might not have prior experience. For example, branch staff has been encouraged to rotate into positions such as Compliance, Marketing, and Finance and through cross-training, they have found success.
The goal is to give employees the opportunity to increase their skill set and challenge themselves while also improving their awareness of the organization’s overall strategy. And it’s paying off. In 2016, we were able to fill 63% of open employment positions with internal staff. Plus, 21% of staff was promoted within their own department or between departments.
“Competition for good talent is at an all-time high and retaining employees is just as important as attracting them,” explains Fraley. Plus, she says, staff likes it. “Employees see that they are rewarded for their hard work and their potential. We are putting our employees first – that’s our foundation and our legacy.”
